2012년 8월 28일 오후1시(미국 캘리포니아 시간)에 패서디나에 있는 미항공우주국(NASA)의 제트추진연구소에서 항공우주탐사로봇 큐리오시티(Curiosity)에 전파로 이 곡의 음원이 전송되어 화성에서 울려퍼졌다고 합니다.

화성탐사선 큐리오시티 Curiosity 는 2011년 11월 26일에 아틀라스 브이 (Atlas V) 5호 로켓에 실려 발사되어 8개월동안 우주를 여행해서 2012년 8월 6일 화성에 착륙해서 2년동안 탐사활동을 벌일 계획입니다. 

전체 길이는 약 3m, 폭 역시 약 3m, 무게 약 900kg이고 대략 스포티지 크기의 6륜 차량이예요. 총 2조8천억원이 들었다고 하지요.^^

패서디나라는 이름이 친숙하네요. 나사가 있는 텍사즈주 외에 캘리포니아에도 패서디나라는 이름의 도시가 있어요. 미드 빅뱅이론(Big Bang Theory)의 배경인 칼텍공대가 있는 도시죠. 갑자기 하워드가 화성에 있는 차를 운전하게 해준다며 술집에서 여자를 꼬시던 생각이...^^;;;

유니버설뮤직에 따르면 이 현장에 나사(NASA)의 엔지니어들과 학생들이 자리를 함께 한 가운데 지구가 아닌 다른 별에서 음원을 공개한 최초의 곡이 되었다고 해요. 이 말은 우주로 보내진 최초의 곡이라는 뜻이 아니라 음원을 화성에서 공개했다는 의미입니다.

리치포더스타즈 Reach for the stars는 40인조의 오케스트라가 우주분위기를 내는 연주를 하는 독특한 편곡인데 이에 대해  윌아이엠 Will.I.am 은 컴퓨터가 아니고 인간이 만든 음악을 만들고 싶었고, 무언가 영원한 것 그리고 다른 문화권에도 전달될 수 있는 것을 만들고 싶었다고 합니다. 우주인이 들을 수도 있는만큼 인간이 만든 음악중에서 가장 아름다운 소리를 넣고 싶었나봅니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 아주 현대적이면서 우주를 주제로 한 영화음악 같은 분위기를 내는 곡이 되었어요.

윌아이엠 Will.I.am은 클래식팬이라고 하는데 피아노 연주를 직접 하면서 노래를 부르기도 합니다.

제목인 Reach for the stars는 영어 관용어로 별을 따려고 하다(거의 불가능한 것을 얻으려 하다)라는 의미가 있는데 화성에서 발표된 걸 보면 꼭 그런 건 아니네요.^^

노래내용은 제목처럼 불가능하다 생각하지 말고 도전하라고, 하늘이 높다고 하지만 나는 달에 있는 발자국을 보았고, 화성도 그리 멀지만은 않으니 팔을 뻗어서 별을 따려고 해봐라 하는 가사가 이어집니다.
